AFTER… TIME OF DAY

“Happy anniversary, Riles,” Kinsley told her wife.

“Happy anniversary,” Riley replied, kissing Kinsley’s lips. “But our actual anniversary isn’t until this weekend.”

“I know. I just have those two open houses back to back on Saturday and another one Sunday morning. I thought we could celebrate tonight,” Kinsley offered, motioning to their giant wooden dining table.

“I wish I would’ve known. I would’ve left the office earlier,” Riley told her.

“Then, I wouldn’t have had the hour I needed to make us our fancy dinner, light the candles, and set the mood with music.” Kinsley smiled at her as she took Riley’s hands in both of her own.

“Exactly what kind of mood are you trying to set?” Riley asked.

“A sexy one,” Kinsley said, but it really sounded like more of a question than a statement.

“Yeah? What’s for dinner? You or whatever you cooked?” Riley moved her arms around Kinsley’s waist.

“Both, if you’re lucky,” Kinsley replied, wrapping her own arm around Riley’s neck and pulling her in. “I have oysters as an appetizer and lemon-herb chicken with roasted asparagus as an entrée. I also made these little cherry-chocolate tortes for dessert.”

“Babe, you did all that in an hour?” Riley asked.

“You know when I left the office to do that showing today?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, it didn’t actually take all that long. They hated the place, so I came home and started the prep before I went back to the office.”

“You’re a cooking ninja, Kinsley James,” Riley said.

“And, the food is getting cold; let’s eat. You can tell me about your case, and I’ll listen. Then, I’ll give you your gift.”

“Is it you?” Riley asked, lifting an eyebrow at her wife. “It’s been a minute since I’ve had you.” She pulled Kinsley into her body.

“You were the one that had to go off to work on a case for a week and only got back this morning,” Kinsley returned. “I am more than ready to have you, too, Riles.” She pressed a lingering kiss to Riley’s lips.

They reluctantly pulled apart. Riley was pulled by her wife to the chair, which Kinsley also pulled out for her. Riley gave her a nod and a smile, because Kinsley was being adorable tonight. They sat, ate, and talked about Riley’s week in Reno. She’d been handed a case from a former colleague, who had gotten sick and needed her to cover a custody dispute between an ex-husband and ex-wife over their two daughters. One girl wanted to stay with her father during the week and visit her mother on the weekends. The other wanted to do the opposite. Both girls were old enough to testify and make their opinions known to the judge, but it created a lot of complications for an attorney who had only just received the case.

Despite Reno not being that long of a drive from South Lake, Riley had opted to stay in a hotel for the past six nights. She wanted to be able to focus and spend enough time with her client and the two girls.
